I just put this up on Facebook (surprise, surprise) but it is starting to concern me a bit how much they actually know about what we are doing online.

I shall await the 'don't use it then', 'stop watching porn', 'buy a decent PC' comments.

What I find spooky about Facebook is the ads targeting you. They aren't targeting what you say on here, they are going for what you have looked at online, for example this is a Lenovo PC which I recently searched because I was having problems, they are giving me Lenovo ads. How do they know that? I've seen it more and more recently. How are they accessing my history? It's going beyond privacy.

Been happening for years ( even NSC does it ) - the ads are based on your cookies. Clear your cookies down and they can't do it.

It's everywhere, not just Facebook as some have said already.

I made one search for trainers the other day and now I am getting loads of trainers ads popping up. They just use the same form of advertising that many do. To be fair, I find some of the ads that pop up useful, if you don't then there are plenty of ad blockers. Like you say cookies can be useful, but they also lead to the targeted advertising.

I also did that matched betting thing for a week, profited £300 by the way, worth a look I have to say, wish I could carry on but don't have enough time. I digress, anyway now I get every betting company online coming up on facebook, hoping this Disconnect extension helps.

I sent an e-mail the other day to a planning officer about using synthetic Neoprene roof tiles on a conservatory roof and am now getting adds at the bottom of NSCs page about neoprene fitness corsets.
Work that one out......can they read my e-mail content too?

I got the neoprene fitness corset on NSC as well. I think Bozza is probably responsible for that :whistle:

its on their servers, of course they can. why you think they offer a free email service?

its been like this for 15-120 year, as long as mainstream internet, its just getting more obvious because the algoritms are more refined and advertising more specific. i've never been too bothered by the privacy concern because its all automated and they dont pass on your information to the advertisers, they just take a booking to advertise x at people interested in x. now facebook can be a little more creepy because its trawling it database to try to connect you to people, and also creates false accounts for you to draw you in.

Most of these cookie related ads have a small "ad choice" emblem in the corner. Click on this and it takes you to the ad choices website which you can then opt out of receiving these type of ads. I did this recently as I had been looking online for some nice lingerie for the Missus( honest!), when she next went online she was wondering what Id been up to with all the cookie related ads coming up on her facebook!!

Frankly I'd rather have targeted ads than the alternative, which is all manner of random shit.

I won't block ads because many sites, including this one, rely upon them.

I allow them on here and a few other sites

If anyone wants any tips on where to buy sheds, guitar strings or gifts for visually impaired 2year olds I'm your man!

At the moment it's all about Zinc cladding and 'Doom'. 2 things of genuine interest to me.
