I know a lot find it just picky, but whenever I see bad grammar, spelling, and incorrect captions in papers, it just stops me in my stride and I tend to not read any more.

The Argus are probably the worst exponent I have seen.

If that's the standard of sub-editing then I reckon I could easily get a job doing it. I might drop them a line and ask if they need a good poof-reader.

Relief off the bench might be, but I don't know what relief of the bench is.

This. It could go either way. The rule of thumb - read the text in your head and you'll find that you would probably briefly pause after 'spelling,' making the comma valid.
