Bloody Worthing!
But there is evidence that there is a possibility of a shaggy haired liar becoming our PM, Boris is favourite to win. There is evidence that he would try and take the UK out without a deal, he has said he would. There is evidence that no deal would lead to a hard border in Ireland. There is evidence that the US would be interested in selling more full priced pharmaceuticals to the NHS as part of a trade deal.

What do you think is a more likely outcome, if this one seems far fetched?

Just the very thought of Boris on one side of the Atlantic and Trump on the other is sufficient to make Remaining with (mostly) sane and rational Europeans with (most importantly) appropriate hairstyles a hugely attractive proposition. Please deliver us from the Boris-Donald axis of awfulness,

Just shows that despite the media love in with Farage people aren’t stupid enough to vote for them . If they can’t win in those circumstances they will never will do

The truth is Labour would have picked up lots of votes from the Europeans who live there. That's still a good result for the Brexit party considering they only launched a few months ago.

This is certainly the standard narrative (and one that Nigel would like us to share). But the rise of the Brexit Party must be seen in the context of the complete collapse of the UKIP vote. Most of their votes are simply switchers from one flawed brand to another. (I think this analysis holds up to scrutiny a little more robustly than 'it's the Europeans that got Labour in'.)

A quote from The Guardian:

Brexit party insiders said Labour’s reliance upon a mainly Pakistani vote in inner-city wards had been the difference between the parties. “Some of these houses had 14 people in them registered to vote. It would be interesting to see what proportion voted Labour,” said one.

The Brexit Party people sound so nice.

Or they want to leave but are not racist?

The Brexit party isn't racists is it? I thought they had only one policy - hard Brexit. I was unaware they have any official views on any other issue. I'm inclined to agree with nwgull.

Only UK (and Irish) citizens can vote - so they wouldn't have picked up any votes from Europeans.

This is a terrible result for the Brexit Party - only two weeks after a strong showing in the Euro elections it can't win in a strongly-Leave seat.

Quite frankly, if it can't win in a by-election when it's riding on a wave, it's going to get nowhere in a GE, when its resources are going to be more widely spread and where its policies will come under closer scrutiny.

Nigel Farage left by a back door when the count was concluding, so he wouldn't have to face the press.

Agree with that - last night's result was dreadful for the Brexit Party and is IMO is meaningless when comparing to a (post Brexit) GE. All that happened was the 'leave' vote was split between two parties thus ensuring a Labour hold.

What is shows is that unless the Tory party deliver on (some form of) Brexit they are finished.

That is a racist comment in itself. How can anyone defend it?

This. What we have here is a consituency that is MASSIVELY Leave and an outgoing Labour MP who ended up in PRISON. If you can't win that as a protest vote in a by-election you can kiss the General Election goodbye.

If you've got that basic fact wrong how much else about the process do you reckon you've misunderstood?

It's been pointed out to him before on here that EU citizens can't vote in general elections, but you'd have really thought that someone with an EU national for a Mother, who he helped apply for settled status, would know a basic fact like that.

You speculate without any real evidence, other than what you THINK might happen, and having convinced yourself that it WILL happen, then call 17 million people idots! One is tempted to state that it might indeed be you who is the idiot.

If I were you I'd use the term " Moron " , easier to spell and you don't look like an idiot when you get it wrong.

I wouldn't be too hard on someone who makes a mistake and then apologises. The problem was that what was just an opinion was presented as a stone cold fact, an absolute truth.
