Really seems to be a hiding for nothing for all involved. I do have humanity and realise why many thousands of people have fled, I just wish that most would claim asylum in the FIRST safe country they arrive in.

Putin seems to be an absolute arse, Assad should be charged with war crimes, strangely the Americans seem to come out with the least criticism right now although they have admitted some mistakes.

Horrible for the innocents caught up in this, very sad all round.

I used to agree but now think that it shouldn't be the first country they arrive in that should bear the burden. Just because you border a country in turmoil you shouldn't be expected to take on the role of saviour. It is an international problem and we should all contribute to the solution...whatever that might be

Maybe going to war should be a public vote as I'm sure most people would have just left the middle east alone full stop.
Pointless at the beginning and it's pointless now!!!

if you take claiming asylum in the first country you come to out of the equation you could end up with some countries forcing people to move onward to be someone elses problem as we witnessed in some countries last year.
The really vulnerable, victims of torture or rape or who need urgent medical attention who simply dont possess the means to traipse across various countries could end up being forced elsewhere at the very moment they seek assisstance

The barbarity transcends politics, it's just inhumane and disgusting, night after night.

Totally agree, bombing and shelling civilian populated areas in the vain hope you wipe out some opposition fighters is disgusting. Seriously will there be anything left in Syria when the conflict finally stops. A religiously tolerant and diverse society, well-educated people with a long history and culture will be starting from scratch, with so much bitterness and hatred amongst the various factions, sects and religions, you can't imagine how they can ever live in peace again. it's easy to blame the west, but if Assad at the beginning had showed a modicum of acceptance that reform was coming, instead of setting snipers to shoot peaceful protesters, this all could have been different.

Why aren't the rich Arab states in the Gulf not helping accept any Syrian refugees?

Rights groups point out that those countries — Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates — with wealth amassed from oil, gas, and finance, collectively have far more resources than the two Arab states that have taken in the most Syrians: Jordan and Lebanon. The Gulf states are Arabic-speaking, have historic ties to Syria and some are embroiled in the current crisis through their support for insurgent groups.

Incidentally. police arrested 900 Syrians in England and Wales for crimes including rape and child abuse in just one year.

That's fair on countries that border Syria isn't it?

Whole world should be getting involved in helping people out. Like that is ever going to happen.

It's been unheralded, but Israel is helping out as well. Perhaps the OP (a well known Israel hater) will acknowledge this.

Well done to those Israelis that are making an effort to help those less fortunate than themselves. Less well done to Robot Chicken to try and make political gain by hijacking a thread about a humanitarian disaster. Speaks volumes about a larger chunk of the Israeli population and their need to publicise the little good that they actually do for others, and their wish to permanently portray themselves as victims whilst actually being intolerant neo-fascists themselves.

Oh, and just to make everyone aware, that article is from a well known pro Israel source, there you go, bait taken.

What a disgusting & uncalled for response. The poster is not making political hay. Get it in your thick moronic head that Israel which is as right wing as this country & NOT neo-fascist, is doing what any self respecting, democratic, tolerant nation on this earth should & would do - by helping those who need aid & assistance on its border - regardless of which side of the Syrian argument the incumbents need assistance. Shame on you.

No its not fair on the countries bordering Syria. War isnt fair though. They just happen to be the countries adjacent to another country that has broken out in war.

The trick is contributing to aid, to help those countries closest to the conflict deal with the vast majority of people who are fleeing whose only option is to plead with their nearest neighbours for help. And if you can remove the most vulnerable, ie those that need medical assistance and those that have been subjected to rape, torture and god knows what.

You can of course also commit militarily if you have the resources and necessary expertise and help to stop the vilest of the contributors from continuing their evil or you could just sit back and watch.

Whole world should be getting involved in helping people out. Like that is ever going to happen.

You are right it wont happen, The whole world should form a military coalition consisting of the largest force ever assembled, an enormous ground army could exterminate Islamic State fighters and any cult followers they have picked up like dippy idiotic jihadi brides in a matter of days to stop the cancer leaving the region. Then working under the united nations the Combined air power of multiple nations working along with untold ground forces could enforce a ceasefire.

Agree with you. The Middle East (and Muslims) are clearly not ready for democracy so they should have been left alone to sort out their own problems. They could have continued to fight and murder each other over the Sunni/Shiite issue and other tribal feuds until there was none of them left. And the world would have been a better place.

They should indeed have been left to sort out their own problems, sadly though that have resources and land wanted by the West so were not allowed to. Would they have sorted it out? doubtful i suppose but at least we wouldn't have been involved in it. Does the US et al benefit from an unstable middle east? I would say yes, although i can't help but wonder if they had planned for Syria being such a basket case.

What leader could bomb, gas and shoot his own civilian population, year after year?

What is most worrying is that despite this Russia is prepared to support him personally., thereby being complicit in the murder of civilians on a huge scale.

Russia has been involved in Syria for decades. It was Russian weapons being used to attack Israel back in the 60s. I know it's fashionable to knock the West in these threads, but Russia has caused unrest in the Middle East for a long time. That's one of the reasons we have listening posts in Cyprus, to try and keep an eye on what they're doing.

Brighton factually.....
Could be total clap trap..

There are unconfirmed reports on social media that the Russians actually killed SAS, Israeli and Turkish special forces in the attack that they did because we, and others were using the post to direct attacks....

Worrying if true, that we won't admit what we are actually up to along with the yanks...

It will come to ahead soon.

If we had a referendum on going to war in 1939, we'd all be speaking German today. Fact.
