Anyone hear him getting interviewed on Radio 2 this afternoon? He said he nearly gave up football completely after being rejected After a trial with Brighton.
Who on earth did that? Must've been Barry Lloyd era.

It's on his Wikipedia entry - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Wright

States he signed for Palace in 1985, which would indicate his trial here pre-dated Barry Lloyd. Cattlin?

Yep. I was talking to Ted Streeter about it a few years ago. We rejected Roy Keane at around the same time too.

Didnt he want to go home as homesick , so the story goes but Paul McCarthy stayed here.

Didn't Wright score a hatrick for the reserves before being released or is that just an urban myth .

Thought Roy Keane had his trial cancelled when CC found out how "small" he was .

According to his biography, George Petchey sent him down to us from Millwall, scored against Swindon reserves, but we didn't offer a contract as we had too many strikers, Saunders, Connor, Ferguson, Fashanu. He was 19 so over junior age, so there was no space.

There were lots of different stories about him not sure which one is correct.

A very good mate of mine was a young pro at the time Ian Wright came on trial, he says he was just one out of a conveyor belt of trialists and did't particularly stand out above anyone else, he wasnt a surprise that nothing was offered.

Saunders, Ferguson and Fashanu weren't at the club at the time Wright was on trial, not 100% certain that even Connor had signed by then ??

He was on Breakfast tv on BBC yesterday morning. He was 22 before Palace took him on, so a late developer.

Wright came on trial in November 1983 (and played in the same two reserve games as Steve Penney, against Swindon, where Wright scored, and Reading). Connor had arrived in March 1983 in exchange for Andy Ritchie; Connor was cup-tied and couldn't play in the FA Cup.
