Albion's manager reflected on a disappointing evening for his side.
Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton was frustrated by the cheap nature of the two goals conceded in their 2-1 EFL Cup defeat against Reading this evening.The Albion boss also rued a number of missed opportunities against the ten-man Royals, and felt his team left it too late to claw their way back into the game.
He said, “We conceded two poor goals against a team that started better than us. With the system they played, we found it difficult to get as close as we wanted, and I thought it was always going to be about the team that was more clinical in front of goal.
“There’s no doubt that we had more chances than them, and got the ball into the box more often, but we weren’t able to convert our chances.
“We made it a really exciting cup tie in that last half-hour of the game, but it wasn’t enough in the end.”
Reading defender Tyler Blackett saw red shortly before half-time at the Amex, and Hughton felt his team needed to show more quality in order to make their numerical advantage count.
“They defended very well and put the onus on us to break them down, and you’ve either got to have a little bit of luck, be able to stretch them, or show that little bit of quality.
“In that period, it wasn’t through lack of trying or not getting enough balls into the box, but they’ve got to be a certain level of quality and you’ve got to force that ball over the line.
“The one goal that we did get probably came a little too late, as had it been a touch earlier, I think we would have had a really good chance of getting back into the game. But we paid the price for conceding the two goals that we did.”

Hughton made 11 changes to the starting line-up that beat Burton Albion on Saturday, and supported his decision to rotate the squad, despite exiting the cup.“We’ve got a very competitive squad at the moment, and the team that we put out tonight was a good enough team to win the game.
“He’s a promising young player [Rob Hunt] and I think over the 90 minutes he acquitted himself very well, but it was also a very good opportunity for [Connor] Goldson and [Uwe] Huenemeier, who haven’t had many minutes at first-team level.
“[Steve] Sidwell and [Oliver] Norwood are both players that have been very involved with the first team, so we certainly had enough experience out there.”
