Ollie Rayner must be feeling a bit sick, seeing that has been Batty in the squad.

What a shit, backward looking selection that is.

It also shows how far the 'promising youngster' Adam Riley's stock has fallen.

Even the lad Leach at Somerset would have been a better selection. What a waste of a space that selection is, staggering. I blame bloody Alec Stewart and his relentless pushing of Surrey players in the media, he's so blinkered it's untrue.

It's a total horses for courses selection, he won't let us down if called upon and I doubt he'll be called upon. I'd rather see our other spinners playing for the Lions than carrying the water in Bangladesh.

I love the Hameed selection, averaged 50+ in Div 1, he's a proper opener and has a man at the other end who first played for England at a similar age. Duckett had to come in after his season, I wouldn't be surprised if he plays in the first test.

Not sure about Finn on these sort of wickets though, unless he's bowling rapid again.

Why is it a waste?

He has been the best spinner in the County Championship this season. After these seven tests on the sub continent, we not due down there for a while.

If he is rubbish and hit out the ground, he is never going to be picked again. But if they take a promising youngster and he is destroyed down there, it could ruin his confidence for a while. Simon Kerrigan has never really recovered from the Aussies mauling him.

What's happened with him? Is he not getting game time at Kent ?

The figures simply don't back that up.

Rayner 50 wickets at 22
Leach 61 wickets at 23
Batty 41 wickets at 32

How do you improve spinners without giving them the chance to play and learn on these sub continental wickets. What will we learn from Battys inclusion? Nothing.

We've got a decent test team but we are lacking a top class spinner, Batty will never be that man but Leach might be.

He is - in their 2nd XI. He played 3 games at the start of the season in the county championship and failed to take a wicket and hasn't featured since.

Funny how that can happen in cricket. Players can very quickly go from the international frame to struggling for a contract quite quickly

Send the youngsters on the Lions Tour, where they get game time and if it goes wrong, less of a problem.

The reality is, for the first test Rashid and Ali will play, with Root bowling some of the overs.

I've no doubt it'll be Rashid and Ali, but there was an opportunity to give a younger player some time around the first team, playing the Indian "county" teams in warm up games, training with full internationals, expanding their knowledge of what's required. Yes they might mess up, but equally they might shine.

Still it is what it is, hope Batty has packed his tray.

Cannot see where the Lions are this winter, but often if the first team are playing a five match series, the Lions are in the same country.

Still think it is correct for the young spinners to get game time on the Lions tour.

Problem is, these days, we don't really play many warm ups and those we do play are essential for the 1st XI to get up to speed. It may be that Batty doesn't even bowl a ball in first class cricket on this tour. Glorified net bowler, I suspect.

Gareth Batty will be 39 in less than 4 weeks' time. His last test was June 2005, so 3 1/2 years before Graeme Swann made his test debut (and he's only 37!). Staggering selection, the bartender at Lord's must have been pouring extra large measures of gin at the selectorial meeting.

There's hope for Monty Panesar yet!
