CHRIS HUGHTON highlighted the importance of the first goal in Brighton & Hove Albion's 2-0 defeat to Brentford on Saturday.Scott Hogan’s double secured all three points for the Bees, and Hughton believes his team were punished for not finding the breakthrough first.
He said, “They kept the ball better than we did, and we didn’t really allow ourselves the chance to impose our game on them. I have no complaints with the result.
“There’s no doubt that goals change games, and also the way you react afterwards. We got into some good areas, but it was always going to be about the team that got the first goal.
“The first goal lifted them and made us a little more desperate in our play. We had a performance here against Forest that we didn’t start very well, but we scored and went on to perform well.”
Hughton praised Hogan for his match-winning performance, but couldn’t hide his disappointment at Albion’s failure to focus on their own strengths.
“Their [Brentford] movement up front was very good. Hogan has lots of pace and the second goal was a bit of individual quality from him.
“Defensively, I thought the first goal was really disappointing. We weren’t at our best and we started playing too many long balls, and although we have the ability to do that, our game is generally based on keeping possession and playing through the thirds.”

DEAN SMITH praised the collective effort of his Brentford side and was delighted to contain Brighton's attacking threat.The Bees boss took great pleasure from his team’s performance at the Amex, and commended their efforts for beating one of last season’s front-runners.
He said, “It was a fantastic team performance. The result is the icing on the cake, but the performance was excellent.
“We didn't concede too many open chances, except the one before the break. Our second-half performance was excellent and we created a number of really good chances.
“What's pleasing for me is we were told last season that we don't beat top six teams. They finished third and we beat them, so we can put that to bed now.
“Glenn Murray and Tomer Hemed are dangerous players at this level and we dealt with that threat very, very well.”
Smith was pleased to see his game plan come to fruition, as Scott Hogan’s pace proved decisive inside the final third.
“His performance was excellent. The runs he made were excellent, and but for the timing of passes, he'd probably have a couple more.
“We felt they would play a high line, because they have a lot of time on the ball, so we felt we could exploit it by going over and through them.”
