To Birmingham at the end of last season is looking very unwise right about now.

Chester was responsible for finding kayal, knockheart, goldson, rosenior, skalak etc we had excellent recruitment last season.

Now we are left with winstanley who seems to be a bit of a plodder incapable of getting deals done and seemingly incapable of finding new talent.

Thoughts ?

Stephenson went years ago under gus. Winstsanley (who was involved in the deals you mention )more involved now

A real blow losing him, such a key part of the set-up and we subsequently had a non-event of a transfer window, but the Championship's a great division and we must embrace it for the foreseeable...and probably way beyond that. :)

It's starting to look like we've had a bad transfer window. Norwood and Sidwell don't fit into the system and slow the game down for us. Duffy isn't as good as Goldson. Nobody to compete with Baldock.

I think the word 'yet' might be useful in there somewhere. Don't think there's anything wrong with Sidwell or Norwood - they're a massive upgrade on JFC and Ince. They just don't have the same chemistry with Kayal as Stephens, which is perhaps not surprising as that must be our best midfield partnership for 30 odd years. If those 2 aren't playing together then it was always likely 4-4-2 would not be as good an option. As for Duffy, 2 games.

Too early yet to say we didn't have a good transfer window - it's just that it's looking like it wasn't a good one at the moment.

I have no idea who did/does what when it comes to recruitment, and to be honest on a level I don't think it really matters.

The bottom line is MONEY.

It's clear every penny still has to be spent with a 'moneyball' justification, and, a la the Hyypia season, there just wasn't enough money to go around.

And of course the disaster that is Derby County throwing stupid money at every recent transfer window completely undermines that argument. How can you say the quality of recruitment personnel at a club doesn't matter!?

Not sure where £4M for Duffy fits in with Moneyball.

You mean the 24 year old, Everton scholar, who knows the Championship inside out, has played all levels of international football, and was last seen in the last 16 of the Euro's.

Granted he's been shitehouse for us, but that's not the point

Ewan wants to retire in a year or two and in that period he wanted the opportunity to spend more time at home in Scotland. It was easier to do that based in the midlands than in Brighton so it was difficult to hold on to him but YES he is a big loss

Norwood looks a decent ball player but too much of a luxury player for 4-4-2 doesn't cover enough ground, hence us losing the midfield battle.

The introduction of Duffy seems to have rattled our back four and Bruno in particular. He also looks a bit of a hoof ball merchant so he will need to adapt and quick otherwise a fit Conor Goldson keeps him out of the team all day long.
