Chris Hughton is not ruling out Dale Stephens signing a new contract

CHRIS HUGHTON has not given up hope of Dale Stephens signing a new contract – despite the player’s transfer request.
Stephens could return to the starting line-up today as Albion return home to face Brentford in the Championship.
Hughton has been keen to emphasise he has no problem with Stephens’ desire to play Premier League football or his deadline-day attempt to engineer a move to Burnley.
Albion, who agreed a five-year deal with Lewis Dunk this week, are in ongoing talks with Beram Kayal over a new contract before he potentially becomes a free agent next summer.
Stephens also has less than year left on his current terms.
Hughton has dismissed a suggestion that it would be unrealistic to expect him to re-sign with the Seagulls.
He told The Argus: “With the players who are coming towards the end of a contract, we are very keen to keep them here and to keep them here on longer deals.
“The same thoughts would apply to Dale and Beram.
“Dale has been excellent right the way through.
“There isn’t anything he has said that he hasn’t said to us.
“We know where we stand with him. Nothing changes.
“We would want to tie him down to a longer deal but ultimately it is all about what the player wants.
“Our stance hasn’t changed.”
