Glenn Murray will soon be scoring goals again in Albion colours.
That is the confident verdict of manager Chris Hughton after the 0-0 draw at Derby County on the opening day of the season.
Murray’s first league outing for the Seagulls for five years lacked only a finishing touch as the striker back on loan from Bournemouth for the season led the line powerfully with Tomer Hemed.
He had three chances and Hughton believes he will start taking them once he is fully back up to speed following limited opportunities with Bournemouth.
Hughton told The Argus: “The reason we brought Glenn back in is because of the qualities he has. He is someone who is used to scoring goals.
“Last season he didn’t have too many starts and sometimes that part of the game (finishing) might take a little bit longer to get back into a real rhythm.
“I’ve got no doubts that he will and that he will be a very good signing for us if he keeps putting in performances like that and working as hard. It’s just the balances.
“Even as regards the physical aspect, although he was fit all last season, he hasn’t had that real high level of competition because he wasn’t starting for Bournemouth on a regular basis.
“We’re delighted with him and he gives us a nice presence.”
Albion had the better of the game against a team widely touted to be a promotion rival.
“It was, I thought, an opportunity away from home to get a victory,” Hughton admitted. “On the balance of play it was a fair result, we edged the chances.
“In the first half we got into some really good positions and probably our final ball let us down but at least we come away with the feel of not losing the game and something to build on for the next league game on Friday.”
Albion open their home campaign in the Championship against Derby’s neighbours Nottingham Forest, who started with a 4-3 win against promoted Burton at the City Ground.
