BRUNO says Albion face a battle with themselves to forget last season’s exploits in the Championship.
The Seagulls started with 21 matches unbeaten, finished with 14 matches undefeated, suffered just five defeats and racked up 89 points, only to miss out on automatic promotion by one goal.
They went on to lose to Sheffield Wednesday in the play-offs, emphasising the fine margins between success and crushing disappointment.
Bruno, who leads Albion out in Saturday’s opening game at Derby, said: “I think this season we are going to play against ourselves. It is so difficult when you’ve had a great season before – not to keep that intensity, that high level.
“What’s difficult is to get the same points and results, because sometimes it’s about the small details.
“We don’t have to compare with last season, we just have to think about this season. Last season is gone. Every single game is a final for us.”
Right-back Bruno is set to fill in at centre-half at the iPro Stadium, with Connor Goldson sidelined by a knee ligament injury and Uwe Huenemeier not expected back from long-term groin damage until early September.
“We are so disappointed because we couldn’t expect it (Goldson) and now we are in a hurry to get a centre-back,”
Bruno said. “We don’t have to think about that, it’s not in our hands. We need to give our best in every single training session and game. We don’t want any excuses.”
