The horrors of war blurs all sense of reason and escalates the hatred and feelings of revenge. The conflict in Syria has been awful but such actions are not unexpected, the latter stages of the Second World War were marked by atrocities as the Germans became ever more desperate and more recently the destruction of Yugoslavia threw up some awful tragedies. It's not nice, it's horrifying but, it happens.
