The Treasury said the TUC study did not fully reflect living standards, which were also affected by changes to taxes and benefits. It added that the number of people in work had been rising and was above the levels of early 2008, when the economy entered its longest and deepest postwar recession.

“This analysis ignores the point that following the great recession the UK employment rate has grown more than any G7 country, living standards have reached their highest level and wages continue to rise faster than prices – and will be helped by the new national living wage.”

We're all in it together though aren't we? Or, at least we will be, we promise we will be now that the one that thinks she's in a nasty party has taken over.

While we have nasty billionaire employers like Philip Green and Mike Ashley lining their pockets and treating their staff like sh*t.

I wonder if there is a connection between exorbitant pay at the top, and poverty wages at the bottom. Or is it just coincidence?

The Treasury would try and put a positive spin on this though, wouldn't it?

We've heard this week about the appalling employment practices of companies like BHS and Sports Direct - the 'unacceptable face of capitalism'.

And how many of the new jobs boasted by the Treasury are more low-paid dead-end jobs (in spite of the so-called Living Wage), zero-hours contracts and part-time employment, filled by people who still will struggle to make ends meet or afford a roof over their heads?

The cost of living here is just ridiculous and has spiralled out of control at an alarming rate. Many people doing average jobs were earning more 20 years ago and you could get a mortgage on that salary back then...The futures bleak for many that's for sure as company's and big bosses love paying stupid wages.

Yup. Your riches have emanated entirely from your own effort, and have nothing whatsoever to do with your parenting, schooling, the infrastructure, colleagues, government policy, etc. But you carry on thinking that individuals are sacrosanct, although some are more sacrosanct than others.

Do Tories ever listen to themselves patronising others, while having no empathy or understanding of what life is like for those less well-off than themselves? Tories always blame the low-paid, not the selfish, greedy, ruthless employers who pay poverty wages while receiving millions in salaries and bonuses themselves (Mike Ashley, Philip Green, etc).

In any conflict between employers and workers, I have never, in my whole life, heard a Tory condemn the employers; it's always, somehow, the workers fault if their pay is too low, or they are treated badly by management. Talk about blaming the victims.

Pay ratio between Britain's top CEOs and workers is 183:1 - do these bosses work 183 times as hard, put in 183 as many hours, or produce 183 times more than their staff?

Or are they just greedy *******s who pay themselves this much simply because they can get away with it - knowing that their Tory chums will always make excuses for their sheer greed, while passing laws to weaken trade unions even further, and blame poverty pay on immigrants (to divert attention away from the top 1%)?

question: is lower wages but higher employment better than higher wages with lower employment? i.e. does this TUC report account for lower unemployment?

Whinge, complain, whinge, moan and bash the Tories.
What a terrible country this must be. Probably why so many people want to come and live here.
Yes, there are problems; there always have been and always will be, but on the whole it isn't too bad.
Hand wringing Guardian writers and readers, many of whom are very comfortably off 'concerned middle class types' don't really give a flying f--k about anything that goes on outside their comfortable righteous little world. They just pretend to, because it makes them feel good.
As for Her Majesty's Official Opposition, well they would run the country just fine wouldn't they!
I do agree though that a greedy shite like Green should get his comeuppance. I really don't think that anyone, whatever their political persuasion, can think otherwise.

I am not totally sure about the figures, but those voting Tory at election time, number anything between 10 and 13 million, give or take. That is by your reckoning one hell of a lot of people who have no idea how others live. No one disputes that the excesses of green at al are obscene but it might just be that most employers are not like that????! Perhaps you should think twice before spouting such extreme exaggerated rhetoric.

I blame Brexit. Everything was much more reasonably-priced in the old days; we all earned more, we didn't have to lock our doors, kids played safely in the streets, England were good at football, it all went to pot after the Referendum.

Did you not see the Tory MP's sitting on the parliament select committee giving Mike Ashley and Phillip Green a good grilling recently?

Surely it's just down to simple economics, wages go down when there is more Labour available to takes these roles and businesses aren't facing much competition for employees.

Wages go up when there is a shortage of Labour for a role and therefore employers have to pay more to get someone to join them rather than a rival.

This is why some industries have seen dramatic falls in wages, such as the building, plumbing trades, etc as more and more workers capable of doing this work have become available to employers (migrant Labour, etc)

This could help explain why poorer areas of the country voted out as they are the areas most likely to have wage deflation and housing inflation as more Labour moved into the area

Thank **** for that. All is saved.

The point being that you can make statistics fit whatever argument you like. The Guardian are clearly trying to make theirs fit their anti-Brexit view.
