Connor Goldson is racing against time to be ready for the Championship kick-off.
The centre-back is expected to miss the Seagulls’ penultimate friendly run out at Oxford United tomorrow.
That will leave him with, at best, one game in which to tune up for the trip to Derby County on August 6.
Hughton has recognised his “concern” over central defence, with Lewis Dunk currently the only fit senior specialist at his disposal.
The Albion boss is willing to use Bruno as an emergency centre-back or as cover if absolutely necessary.
But, though the hunt for a new striker is continuing, he sees the heart of defence as his biggest issue ahead of the new campaign.
Albion split their first team squad and suffered defeats at Luton (2-1) and Stevenage (1-0) on Saturday.
Dunk skippered the team at Luton, where he scored but also gifted the hosts their first goal.

Goldson has missed all pre-season outings so far with a knee injury and it is not clear for how much longer he will be absent.
Hughton said: “He won’t make midweek, put it that way.
“It is a concern, yes, but it would be no different to a lot of teams. You are already seeing teams who are missing players. It’s part and parcel of it.
“Bruno is always an option because he is experienced. There is no doubt his best position is right-back but he is an option.
“I think probably that is the only area (of concern) at the moment.”
Ben Hall, the under-23 signing from Motherwell, and Tom Cadman started in central defence at Stevenage and Luton respectively with Ben White injured.
Dunk is reportedly interesting West Brom but The Argus understands Albion have received no recent offers for his services.
