Brighton & Hove Albion lost their second friendly of the day, with a 1-0 defeat at League Two Stevenage.
*
The Seagulls had been put through a hard work-out at Luton Town earlier in the afternoon but fielded a stronger side at the Lamex Stadium – and that was certainly reflected in a dominant start to the game.
*
Kazenga LuaLua had Albion’s first chance when he went close following good link-up play between Liam Rosenior and Beram Kayal.
*
Sam Baldock and Danny Holla also had sights on goal as the Seagulls pressed for a second, but Stevenage looked dangerous on the break, with new signing Jobi McAnuff pulling the strings in midfield.
*
It was the former Reading man whose clever reverse pass played in Matt Godden, but David Stockdale was equal to the effort.
*
LuaLua was proving to be a dangerous outlet for Albion in the opening stages and could have broken the deadlock, only to be foiled in a one-on-one with Boro keeper Jamie Jones – his follow-up cleared off the line by Luke Wilkinson.

A drinks break halted Albion’s momentum and it was Boro who then took the lead on 31 minutes when Rowan Liburd sprung the offside trap before coolly rounding Stockdale.
*
Albion stepped up the pressure once again with Kayal trying his luck from the edge of the box, while Sam Baldock flashed an effort across the face of goal, having been played in by Danny Holla.
*
Boro ended the half with Fraser Franks stinging the fingers of Stockdale from distance – but the Albion keeper did well to push the ball away for a corner.
*
The hosts started on the front foot after the break, with Godden foiled from close range by Stockdale, while LuaLua flashed an effort over the bar for Albion.
*
Holla went even closer from distance having been teed up by Kayal, while at the other end Dipo Akinyemi saw his curling effort hit the woodwork for Stevenage.
*
Albion should have got back on level terms when Hemed connected with a teasing Baldock centre but his close-range effort went over the bar.
*
Pett also had a golden chance to extend Stevenage’s lead soon after, but substitute keeper Robert Sanchez saved well with his feet.
*
Brighton made a fleet of changes in the final ten minutes with a host of U23 players coming on, but they failed to find the necessary breakthrough.
*
Albion: Stockdale (Sanchez 60); Rosenior, Bruno, Hall (Roscoe 72), Hunt (Hutchinson 80); Murphy (Ward 80), Holla (Adekugbe 80), Kayal (Tighe 80), LuaLua (Tilley 80); Baldock (Harper 72), Hemed (Ayunga 88).The new Brighton & Hove Albion away kit is out now. Click here to purchase yours!
