Who ties your shoelaces for you?

Of course people that work at McDonalds are better than people that chose not to work.
If the couple that this thread is about chose to live in a caravan in their own field and didn't have a council property or take zero benefits, I wouldn't criticise them.

One of my sons worked at McDonalds for 4 years, at the same time he went to college and then university.
He would admit it's not a great job, but I admire people that work hard rather than sit around sponging

Quite. One can't declare themselves to be living an alternative lifestyle if they are basically still living off the gains of work. It's just shameful that it's other people's work.

He's definitely fit enough to work, but has a council property and is on benefits.
Swims in the rough sea, works on his allotment which is miles from his home and does a bit of yoga.

I wonder how many people in Brighton that are working, but don't earn enough to get a mortgage, but also are not entitled to a council house.

You're making assumptions about me there chief. Have a good night.

Now if you were saying they weren't at fault for the situations of some people not involved in our conversation, well no shit, of course they're not. I (understandably I think) thought you were saying they weren't at fault for their own situation (given that you could describe the family as being in a horrible situation).

Ah.

You're unreal chap. You make assumptions and spout crap.

You know the square root of **** all about me. I though have a good idea of how you perceive the world.

Bye

Yeah people make a lot of assumptions. You assuming you know much about how I percieve the world is also bollocks. I agree I dont know shit about you though.

quite clearly nothing like the "off grid" family. may they'd like to swap (the parents only obviously).

You seem to be ignoring the fact that these parents have made a concious choice to live this way. Nobody has forced them. And contrary to what you say, the state and society are fully supporting this for them.

I am going to make another assumption: these people on the one hand living "off grid" and on the other going to TV shows etc. got some issues.

Do you have any plans for your 16th birthday?

We're doing the age guessing thing? Hmm, considering you out of the blue implied that I must be about 15 years old, I do believe you are about 21 or 22 and believing you have finally gotten old enough to laugh at teenagers. Correct?

I turned 30 in May btw. As for what I was doing, I was drinking beer and petting goats.

Swannsman you've clearly got analytical skills judging by the Potter thread. Why not put them to good use rather than jacking goats off(I assume that's what the blurry hand is doing) and defending our resident scroungers?

I've never seen the disperate forces of NSC so united. That really does take some doing.

Maybe I'm the alien threat to unite mankind.

They'd do better to go and live in a bender in a Welsh valley, claim thier benefits and stop courting the media. It takes all sorts to make a world.

Swansman, you're not getting much support on here, so let me offer it. I totally agree with you that too often people point their ire at those near them, whose narratives are easy to digest (immigrants, "scroungers", etc) whereas the much bigger, more important picture is the concentration of resources that mean a lot of people can't get the support they need. I also agree that our education system is misguided and think we need to do a lot more on critical thinking (especially now as facts are apparently becoming more 'subjective'). But no matter how comparatively trivial this off grid family's story is, I think it's unjustifiable to permit their conscious choice to unnecessarily rely on the work of others and deny their children a more rounded education.

You only have to look to places like Burnley (and I know their situation and how they milk the system) the government expected the job seekers to attend the job centre 3 times a week. This resulted in uproar, why? They complained how could they sign on and still be able to carry out their cash work, unbelievable. Rents paid for, income support, job seekers allowance and cash in hand jobs. Most were "earning" twice the money I was on.

Interesting. What's happening in Burnley?

Asking is always okay regardless of what its about.

If your angry at people "living off everybody else", how about you start with your queen? Ah ye, because its always easier and more tolerated to kick & spit the little people...

The royal family more than cover their costs in the tourism they create.

I mention it only because I have first hand knowledge and can be sure I’m correct in my post. I don’t doubt this is repeated elsewhere.

Yeah, I have.

Folks, close your eyes, I'm gonna get weird:

Most people who choose "alternative" lifestyles are incapable of cooping with the society you "normal" people built. They dont see "working at McDonalds" as a reason to get up in the morning, they might have problems with their mental or physical well-being - in short, they might not be able to have a "function" by your standards.

There are three solutions to this:

The NSC solution; raise pitch forks against people because of their lack of function. You know, the eugenic solution.

The socialist solution: we are strong enough as a society to compensate and even help and support the people not able or willing to function.

And finally the "unfortunately your very important function is going to done by a robot or computer in the very near future so you are going to have to accept not everyone will be slaving for 8 hours a day"-solution: realise you already or in the near future have no function as a worker and find yourself other values and be tolerant when others try to.

Personally I'd go with one of the bottom ones. This, in turn, means that your hypothetical or real economical issues could only be resolved by having the 1% richest people sharing their wealth to society and that being mad at some slacker - there's gonna be many - is both unfair against the individual (since there wont be any 100% employment rate without the NSC solution) as well as completely useless as the little money they get really is a piss in the ocean in the bigger perspective.

Because of this reason, yes I find it possible but incredibly stupid and inhuman to treat the little guy as you treat the 1%.

There is a world of difference between not being able to function (because of illness, addiction etc) and being not willing to function (ie I can't be arsed with this world so I'll let everybody else do it and live my life off of them). I really hope you can understand the difference.

what I oppose is the concept - the mentality - of bashing individuals for doing things that wont really matter and wont harm anyone in the wider perspective.

I'm with you on that principle. However, this couple clearly are harming others, as they pursue their supposedly self-sufficient lifestyle. For starters they are potentially harming:

1) their children: as others on this thread have pointed out, the kids are clearly being harmed by being deprived of basic education and lifeskills, as well as being exposed to unnecessary medical, dental and dietary risks

2) the wider population: their ill-founded decision to opt out of vaccinations exposes the rest of the population to higher risks of dangerous illnesses - there is already a major problem with measles, due to wackos being convinced by scientifically bogus "anti-vaxx" arguments

3) low income people with housing needs: this couple who, as far as one can see, could choose to earn a decent income if they wished, are potentially depriving another family in genuine social need from social housing, which is hardly in surplus supply these days.

I would click on the "thumbs up" for the rest of the day if I could.

Brilliant summary and spot on.
