Surely it is 1 + 10 x 2 = 22 Why are people suggesting the multiplication first it is in the order it is written.

Because the rule is not order written. The rule is brackets then exponents then division/multiplication and lastly addition/subtraction.
See BODMAS above. Division Multiplication Addition Subtraction is the order in which these equations are calculated.
