Sussex vs Hampshire - T20 Blast (Friday night)

Can't see a thread for this but just seen Sussex throw away 2pts needing 5 off the last over for a win on Sky Sports News. Lost by 1 run.

Sussex Sharks' hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages of the NatWest T20 Blast were dealt a blow after they lost by one run to Hampshire at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove.

The Sharks appeared to be in control when they reached 109 for 3 in the 15th over, chasing a target of 135 against a Hampshire side out of contention for the last eight.

Chris Jordan (1) and Craig Cachopa (5) fell cheaply but Sussex still looked favourites when Brad Wheal started the final over with five needed.

Will Beer took a single off the first ball from Wheal and Ross Taylor one off the third, before Beer ran himself out to get the New Zealander back on strike with four needed off two balls. Taylor failed to make contact on the fifth delivery, which went down the leg side, and could only dig the last ball – an excellent yorker – into the leg side, running out his partner Jofra Archer in the process as Sussex finished on 134 for 8.

A full-house crowd of around 6,000 left wondering how Sussex hadn't managed to win the game. Taylor and Matt Machan were initially bogged down by some accurate bowling by Shahid Arfridi and Liam Dawson, as they scored just 17 runs in five between the eighth and 12th overs.

But then Taylor hit Tino Best for two sixes and in the 14th over Machan plundered two more off Dawson to put Sussex into a strong position as 33 runs came from those two overs.

But Machan (29) was lbw to Wheal in the 16th over after the fourth wicket pair put on 46 from 35 balls and ultimately Taylor, who finished with 46 off 47 balls (1 six, 4 fours), was left with too much to do.

Earlier, Wheal had produced another excellent yorker to remove Sussex captain Luke Wright (9) while Dawson ended a promising innings by Wright’s opening partner Chris Nash, who was caught in the covers for 32 in the 10th over.

Hampshire’s score of 134 for 9 didn’t appear to be enough despite a slow, two-paced pitch. They had built themselves a decent platform at 64 for 2 in the tenth over but Tom Alsop was run out for 25 after a terrible mix-up with Dawson which ended with both batsmen at the same end.

Afridi hit his first ball, off leg-spinner Will Beer, for six and looked in the mood but he too was needlessly run out after driving the ball into the stumps at the non-striker’s end and setting off for a run that was never there.

The innings declined rapidly after Dawson (25) was well caught at deep mid-wicket in the 16th over by Chris Jordan, who also bowled well to finish with 2 for 14. Archer, on debut, also impressed with 1 for 27 including the wicket of Adam Wheater (17) in his second over.

Sussex will probably need to win their last three games to have a chance of reaching the knockout stages.

I was shell shocked. Needed just 28 from the last 6 overs (30 balls) with 7 wickets in hand. Awful to lose it from there. Couldn't tell if the young Hampsire lad bowled well, or if Sussex batted poorly. Taylor going after next game too, so no hope getting into the last 8.

The one bright spot for Sussex was the bowling performance of Jafra Archer. Having looked promising against Pakistan, he came in and bowled with control and looked like he should be given an extended run in the side.

I thought we had control of most if that. Restricting our bogey team to 134 was really good, just sad how we threw it away... Looks like we are going back to being a nice little team who win nothing..

If Taylor played the game like a T20 match as opposed to a test match , we would of won. He did the same against Kent but we just made it . Mind you if Nash and Wright go early the middle order looks very weak to me . I fear another disappointing season

We were deprived of two wides although one was slightly dubious. The second was nailed on but for some reason the umpire deemed it ok.

I know the ones you meant. The 2nd one was criminal - wide down the leg side is called every time, except last night. The 1st one was when Taylor shuffled over the the off side and the umpire took that into account. However, there was another one, where we were awarded 4 byes for a wide down the leg side, which should have been 4 wides, and an extra ball.

Having said that, we were more responsible for the defeat than the umpire. Disgraceful performance. But we are short of a batsman or 2.

Yeah, that was a shocking decision. Still, blaming a loss on a dodgy LBW is one thing, blaming it on a non-awarded wide is pretty poor. In the circumstances that was a shocking batting performance, I think they thought they had it in the bag after Hants failed to post a big total.

The sooner Taylor goes the better.. Faced 47 balls and couldn't make 50 runs..He had to hit out or get out with wickets in hand.. slow, negative and lazy player! I'd play Luke Wells instead

Watched it on TV. It seemed that we got in a good position and then showed their bowlers too much respect, expecting to get over the line with cautious play. This just did not work. Taylor is as accountable as the other batsman being the player with his eye in and not delivering.

Massive choke but not surprising, it's the way we've been going for the last few years. And I absolutely detest losing to Hampshire.

We needed a shake up after Robbo went at the end of last season but it didn't happen, we just carried on as we were with an internal appointment and we are a soft touch now. The hardened team of winners of the last decade are very much a thing of the past.

I would have loved some sort of coaching/managerial partnership of Chris Adams and Matt Prior. I think they would have sorted us out and not accepted the mediocrity we now serve up.

Interestingly Prior tweeted last night he had offered help and it's been rejected. When I asked him why he said he didn't know but said 'oh well, they must have it under control' so is obviously a bit peeved about how he has been treated. A real shame if he's not been afforded the respect he deserves, a genuine Sussex legend and winner.

We have been a soft touch for a long time. Robbie stayed for at least 2 seasons too long , a really uninspiring coach appointment in Davis , yet players like Matt are not used ,a recipe for failure , as results this season have already shown

I went on Friday and go to a number of games. IMO the coach was the wrong appointment and Friday was an embarrassment......
