Not quite, it's called (by the south) Derynia, the old tourist area of the city of Famagusta, it's a ghost town now, occupied by the UN, rumoured to have booby traps set by the Turkish and Greek armies after the war in 1974. For some time it was believed the stores still had stock on the shelves as the evacuation was so rapid, but I think that's been disproved as a bit of a myth

I have visited Cyprus many times, and have certainly been told by locals, that in 1974 when the Turks invaded, there was a main Ford car dealership in what became the no-mans land in Famagusta. It was only many years later that UN peace keeping forces examined he garage, to find brand new Ford Escorts, Cortinas, & Capris, years after they were obsolete everywhere else.

yes, that is the story, likewise the BHS store still had clothes in it. Now I only have the word of a UN soldier(?) we met a few years back in Cyprus that it was a great story, but for sure there are no cars there now, and if they were there, they weren't there for very long.

Not quite, Derynia is the village south of Varosha, which is fenced off by the Turkish Army - and the ghost town. Derynia overlooks Varosha but is not occupied (although some is in the Buffer Zone).

Varosha was systematically looted by the Turkish Army soon after it was occupied, and stripped of everything that wasn't nailed down. The car showroom of legend was/is I understand, in Nicosia, in the Buffer Zone, not occupied Varosha which was cleared out of everything within weeks of the Turkish Army moving in. There's no way they would have left brand new cars when they were loading fridges on boats back to Turkey days after they rolled in. People think its Famagusta as that's what the shipping details of the cars are listed as, and Famagusta was the port they came in to.

Be interested to find out if anyone knows more though.
