I was watching the 2 minutes silence from Westminster and 2 girls were on their phones tapping away. Not the best way to remember the fallen.

Been there a few times. incredibly sad. When you see graves of boys aged 15/16/17 it just makes it seem even more tragic.RIP

27 died from Haywards Heath 100 years ago on this day, we have been at the war memorial to show our respect today it was a very moving ceremony.
In the window of the Co-op funeral parlour in South Road has a very good display of the facts and it is very moving.

Train driver this morning announced the silence and stopped at a station for two minutes. Very moving and well respected except for the woman who thought her phone call was too important to interrupt.

The impact of the Battle of the Somme on communities throughout the UK was profound. Whole communities had to come to terms with huge numbers of deaths. Sussex was particularly hit by the scale of the slaughter at the beginning of the battle. My own family was living in County Durham 100 years ago and they felt the effects of what happened on the Somme in November 2016, when my great uncle and hundreds of his comrades in the Durham Light Infantry died on a single day, thanks to a futile and unsuccessful attack on a hill that had no strategic importance whatsoever.

Tragic is a word that doesn't begin to describe what happened.

For The Fallen
Laurence Binyon

With proud thanksgiving, a mother for her children,
England mourns for her dead across the sea.
Flesh of her flesh they were, spirit of her spirit,
Fallen in the cause of the free.

Solemn the drums thrill; Death august and royal
Sings sorrow up into immortal spheres,
There is music in the midst of desolation
And a glory that shines upon our tears.

They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

They mingle not with their laughing comrades again;
They sit no more at familiar tables of home;
They have no lot in our labour of the day-time;
They sleep beyond England's foam.

But where our desires are and our hopes profound,
Felt as a well-spring that is hidden from sight,
To the innermost heart of their own land they are known
As the stars are known to the Night;

As the stars that shall be bright when we are dust,
Moving in marches upon the heavenly plain;
As the stars that are starry in the time of our darkness,
To the end, to the end, they remain.

I missed the silence this morning so will do my own later on.

RIP to the fallen.

Much the same here.

I have done my usual and taken myself away from the rest of the office. I had a meeting cancelled but kept the room booking to have some quiet time.

I am only 28, many my age do the silence and leave it there but I have so much admiration for the men and boys that fought for us all those years ago, it is something that, if asked to do today, I doubt I could.

On days like these I will usually spend half an hour or so doing some research and reading accounts of the people there. It always puts a lot of things into perspective

RIP
