I could be wrong but apparently, in far-right social media sites, they do it to identify Jewish people in a way that's difficult for Google and other search engines to identify as hate speech so others have started adding it to their name as a way of showing solidarity.

This sort of explains why but I'm still not sure of its effectiveness or how widespread the practice was by the far-right. I can't see the point other than virtue signalling.

Heard the same, some sort of echo symbol. It's now been turned on its head by Jewish people and others as a sort of reclamation, to reduce its power to insult or cause harm. I guess.

Why brackets?

For a while, white nationalists, neo-Nazis and anti-Semites – groups largely now part of the disturbing ‘alt-right’ movement – have been putting three sets of brackets around Jewish people’s surnames on Twitter.
The brackets worked like a dog whistle – other neo-Nazi followers would see it, and send that person a barrage of anti-Semitic abuse. It essentially put a virtual target on Jewish people’s heads.

Because punctuation isn’t easily searchable on social networks or Google, most people outside of these groups wouldn’t have come across this disturbingly subtle form of communication.

It all seems a bit childish rather than offensive, an in-joke by a bunch of wallies.
