The last time the Netherlands played an international match without a 'van' in their starting XI was against France during Euro 2000 (they won 3-2).

However, the last time they didn't have a 'van' in their entire match day squad (Peter van Vossen appeared as a late substitute against France) was way back in 1996 in a friendly 2-0 victory against China.

Way up the other end of the scale is former Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff, who in 1982 became the oldest player to lift the trophy at 40 years and 133 days.

Forget about Messi; if you want to find a goalscorer, look no further than Fernando Peyroteo.

The Portuguese boasts the world's greatest goals to game ratio of 1.77, having found the net an incredible 331 times in just 187 games for Sporting Lisbon between 1937 and 1949 (compared to Messi's 0.82 for Barcelona).

Adding to that, he reportedly scored 4 or more goals in a game on more than 30 occasions, including a phenomenal nine in one game.

Deadly.

No country has ever won the World Cup during the papacy (term) of a Pope from the same country.

Not that it should worry Argentina; Messi's broken enough records already, so what's one more?

Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic is the only Premier League players whose last name is completely made up of roman numerals: V (5), I (1), D (500), I (1), C (100).

A gladiatorial name that perfectly suited his play?

Is it true that only Brighton and Wimbledon have played in every round of the FA cup (not in same season) from 1st Qualifying round to Final.

I seem to remember this as being fact due to Wimbledons non league days and an administrative error by us in the 80s/90s that lead to not getting the qualifying bye and having to start from the beginning.

Those moaning about an away trip to Middlesboro should note that SKA Khabarovsk (in the Sea of Japan) and Nistru Kishinev (now Zimbru Chisinau, in Moldavia) faced each other several times at the Second Level of the USSR Championship during the 80s (last time in 1985), travelling 7213km.

I doubt this is correct as the officially recognised record full time scoreline is AS Adema 149–0 SO l'Emyrne

AS Adema won a match 149-0, more than quadrupling the existing record - and without gaining possession between the first goal and the 149th. Their opponents, Stade Olymique L'Emyrne, took complete control of the national league game, reducing Adema to the role of onlookers, as they deliberately plonked the ball in the back of their own net 149 times, in protest over a refereeing decision. (Rumours that the ref whose decision they were protesting against was The Complete And Utter Shyster have yet to be confirmed)

Preston North End beat Hyde United 26 - 0 in the FA Cup, the biggest winning margin in the competition, they were 12-0 up at half time and scored another 16 in the second half.

I'd imagine Wigan Athletic have too.

Although, strangely, the 1950 Charity Shield was played between the England World Cup squad and a Canadian touring team. I wonder if, after the embarrassing showing that year, the FA wanted to get their hands on something.

It wasn't a Canadian touring team, but an England team that toured Canada that summer. Stanley Matthews made the 1950 World Cup squad after impressing on the tour. He played for the touring team in the Charity Sheild game.

His is the only instance of a player and his teacher playing in the same international.
