'Niki Maenpaa has signed a new one-year contract with Albion.

The 31-year-old Finland international will again compete with David Stockdale for a first-team spot next term.

His decision is likely to open the way for emerging keeper Christian Walton to go out on loan in the coming season.

Amendments to the rules agreed by the EFL (Football League) last week make it more practical for players, particularly goalkeepers, to go out on season-long loans with right of recall either to play or train.

Maenpaa has yet to make his Championship debut but played in three cup ties last season after signing from VVV-Venlo and offered stiff competition for the improved Stockdale.

He was particularly impressive in the narrow FA Cup defeat at Hull City in January.

His decision to re-sign gives the Seagulls impressive strength between the sticks.

Albion boss Chris Hughton said: “Niki has shown in the cup matches and in training that he’s an excellent goalkeeper.

“Alongside our other goalkeepers, we are really well covered in that area, and Niki really pushed and challenged David Stockdale throughout last season. I expect him to do the same again this season.

“Under (goalkeeper coach) Ben Roberts they’re an excellent group and work really well as a unit to help and support each other.”

Maenpaa has just returned from a spell away on international duty with Finland for their friendly matches against Belgium and Italy.'

Top bloke in my view. Never grumbles about his lot, keeps Stockdale on his toes. Model professional :clap2:

It's right about the keepers being an excellent group. I see them warming up with Ben Roberts in the north goal before every home match, & they test each other, encourage each other to the limit.

Another good point is, if he had left us, we would have to take out resources on replacing him, now its done along with Sidwell, we can focus more on the new signings
Bang on. It's also great for continuity, minimising any disruption as we attempt to build on a season where we got a heck of a lot more right than wrong.

(I realise the release of Greer, Calde and Bobby contradicts this point a little, but there is also the need to refresh and evolve certains areas, too)

Pleased about this, but also surprised. Must be tough not getting any first team action, but fair play to him.

He played just 4 games for Bury in L1 before he was injured and returned to the Albion. He was a mere 19 years old when he went on loan.

I suspect that this was only the explanation that was offered, whereas Bury decided that it was too much of a gamble for him to continue.

He was also dropped by Plymouth - where he started his career and is obviously highly rated - in League Two.

Not a good season out on loan for him either way which is odd as on the few occasions he has played for the Albion he has looked very competent. Can't see anybody above lower League One being interested this time around given two failed loan spells

Not true, he was bought in as first choice McCormick was injured, when McCormick returned from injury he went straight back in the side and Walton was on the bench.

If DS is injured or suspended for one game and Maenpaa comes in and plays one game before Stockdale is back, would you qualify that as saying Niki had been dropped?
