Unlucky Brighton deserved better

Interesting article by Brian Glanville giving a personal but objective view of the play-offs in current edition of World Soccer.

'Ah, the play-offs. Those perennial travesties of justice. For the third time, unlucky Brighton have been thwarted in the championship play-offs.
They had finished 15 points ahead of Sheffield Wednesday and just failed to qualify ahead of Middlesbrough, losing out on goal difference.
In the first leg of their play-off away to Wednesday, Brighton were afflicted with a plethora of injuries which laid them open to a 2-0 defeat. Then, in the second leg in their splendid stadium-achieved after years of bitter exile from the original Goldstone Ground - they failed to capitalise on their first-half dominance, ran out of steam in the second half, were pegged to a 1-1 draw and thus elimination.
These special circumstances emphasise the arbitrary injustice of the play-offs, simply a device for injecting spurious significance into the latter stages of the football league divisions. Brighton's experience shows, in its injustice, just how spurious an arrangement it is.
