'You can't win it today, but you can lose it'

This has been said a number of times during the Derby - Hull game in reference to it being a two legged tie. It's nonsensical, surely? If you can lose the whole tie today it then surely that means that the other team has won it? No? So you can win it today.

Why do professionals come up with such ludicrous cliches?

I know what you mean, but what they're effectively saying is that you literally can't win it today because there is a second leg to come. But if you get a minimum 3 goal lead then it is effectively game over as the losing team are unlikely to come back from that.

That saying works in sports that are not between two teams or playing but otherwise it is crap.

For example if a golfer shoots 83 in round one then he has lost it but if he shoots 63 he has not won.

In football it is clearly crap for the reasons you say I.e. If one can lose then the other has won.
