Know where this thread is coming from (I saw those threads yesterday as well) but maybe a bit unfair on AEL. Many didn't think he was up to it until Poyet came in and announced he was the best defender in the team - and suddenly he was!
The nobody thought he could make the step up to the Championship - he did!
Maybe the PL would have been a step too far - but who knows? I'd have loved to see if he could step up yet again!

Personally the thought of AEA defending against Aguerro or Vardy both horrifying and, strangely, Hilarious.
