[Brighton] National Health Surgeries closing

I understand that there are a number of surgeries in the Brighton area that could close as the private firms running them are not making enough profit.
I am shocked to learn that a private company can own a NHS surgery and make a profit or close down the surgery causing patients to travel several miles,also
increasing the number of patients at other surgeries which will lead to a poorer standard of service.
I always thought that a group of doctors ran the surgeries and were responsible to their patients, when did this change?

The cost of running surgeries must be hideous and that's all the government care about.
It's like Royal Mail shutting down loads of post offices and now they're booming etc....sadly the health of patients isn't as important as money.
