As you probably all know by now the top three teams of each division qualify along with the two highest placed finishers regardless of what division they are in.

The stand out fact this season is that no Canadian teams have made the playoffs!!!

At the end of regular season this is what we have:

Eastern Conference

Metropolitan Division

1. Washington
2. Pittsburgh
3. NY Rangers
4. NY Islanders
5. Philadelphia

Atlantic Division

1. Florida
2. Tampa Bay
3. Detroit

Western Conference

Central Division

1. Dallas
2. St. Louis
3. Chicago
4. Nashville
5. Minnesota

Pacific Division

1. Anaheim
2. Los Angeles
3. San Jose

And this is how the first round of matches looks; remember it’s not just home and away in the NHL it’s the best of seven matches. I will update the results every day. First matches tomorrow, Wednesday. 16 Wins from here and you have a Stanley Cup.

Not a good start for the Rangers getting beaten 5-2 by the Penguins (who lost 7 of the last 8 play off games against the Rangers) - also keeper Henrik Lundqvist got a nasty eye injury from a stray stick which hopefully isn't too serious. It has to get better

Oh Dear - Rangers fail to take advantage of their home game and lose 3-1 against the Penguins and 2-1 down in the series. They also had a goal disallowed for offside.

Still think it's embarrassing for the Canadians not to be in the playoffs for the first time in 46 years ! :)

Another disaster for the Rangers on their home turf, a 5-0 defeat against the Penguins and 3-1 down in the series. They've come back from this situation before, but it will be a tough ask. Felt sorry for Lundqvist when he was being interviewed after the game - he looked a bit shell shocked, this kind of thing doesn't normally happen to him. He has the mental strength to shut out tonight's result and fully concentrate on the next game - keep the faith Rangers.

Really trying - but the Rangers look shot.

I'm hoping for a repeat of 2 years ago but the form just doesn't seem to be there this time. And the thought of whinger Sid lifting the Stanley Cup is too horrible to contemplate.

On a lighter note - was good to see the Islanders lose after their stitch up of the Rangers to avoid the Penguins and the Caps. And if not the Rangers, I'd love to see Jagr go on - legend.
