Sounds pretty messed up. There are two parts to the event.
Police called to stag do 'Stanley knife' brawl near Temple Bar pub in Brighton.
A 30-strong stag party clashed with a group of men on a night out.
One of the stag party was reportedly armed with a Stanley knife, lashing out as part of the brawl.

Presume the bit where it says "No one was arrested and we have no record of a knife being used. We are not linking this to the later incident currently being investigated as a murder." and the second one reading "Police do not believe the two incidents are linked" passed you by then.
You say that, but only because it's missing the third part of the events. The group of men not part of the stag do were in town to restore the seafront kiosk.

I would think that if the person was killed by the lorry the defence will be that it should be either manslaughter or unlawful killing not murder as stated, unless he was deliberately thrown in front of the lorry. Probably the police start at murder and reduce it as they go.

The police don't start with anything apart from the arrest. It's up to the CPS to look at the evidence and decide the charge.

What a awful incident though, feel not only for his family but also for those that had to witness it, pretty horrendous.

I would think they do no such thing. You can't start an investigation like that. You'l just end up making the evidence fit your theory rather than the other way around.

Wrong. The police arrest them on a holding charge in this case murder and when the evidence is revealed it is only then that CPS are involved.

Suspicion of murder. The police have to ring for advice on the charge, except for traffic and minor theft/drugcharges. There are duty lawyers 24/7.
