Well the answer is definitely not, clip on anything. It is not that difficult to learn how to tie either sort of tie.

Posh dinners normally give some indication of what to wear. Black tie, white tie or lounge suit. If there is no advice then opt for lounge suit - suit and tie. You can always whip off the tie if it's casual attire.

Clip on tie or bow, pfft!
