Brighton 2-0 BirminghamThe player
Steve was a talented, tricky winger with devastating pace. He signed from Ballymena for just £35,000. Alongside fellow wingman Neil Smillie, he won national acclaim for his impressive performance for the Seagulls in the FA Cup win over mighty Liverpool in 1983/84.
The goal
With debutant goalkeeper David Seaman nowhere to be seen, Penney unleashed a looping shot from outside the box into the middle of the goal, to a rapturous response from the Goldstone faithful.

Why this goal mattered
It put the seal on Albion’s third successive home win, taking the club to fourth in Division Two, giving credence to the hope that a return to the top flight was around the corner. And now
Penney went on to play for Northern Ireland in the 1986 World Cup Finals in Mexico. Injury blighted his Brighton career. After being released by the club, he had short spells with Heart of Midlothian and Burnley. Following retirement, he now runs an optician’s practice with his wife.
