Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-21s were beaten 1-0 by Blackburn Rovers at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.

Connor Mahoney’s strike was enough for Rovers to claim all three points in a cagey encounter.

Rovers had a couple of half chances to break the deadlock; Christian Walton saving a tame effort from Jack Doyle before Joe Rankin-Costello fired a speculative attempt over the crossbar.

The deadlock was broken when Mahoney cut inside the Albion defence from the right flank and sent a low strike beyond Walton in the 13th minute.

Henrik Bjordal then drove into space but his shot from distance sailed wide of the right-hand post.

James Tilley was brought down on the edge of the box to earn Albion a free-kick in a dangerous position, but Joe Ward’s subsequent set-piece went over the crossbar.

Anton Forrester drove down the right-hand side for Rovers, but his effort went well wide of the far post.

Bjordal then linked up well with Tilley on the attack, but the latter’s strike from distance went over the target.

Dylan Barnett did well to block a Mahoney shot from inside the box, which looked like being a carbon copy of his goal earlier in the game.

The Seagulls had a shout for a penalty just before the break when Ward appeared to go down after being pushed, but referee Andrew Laver waved play on.

Jesse Starkey was next to try his luck for Albion after the break but his speculative attempt from distance went wide, before Ward’s cross was narrowly missed by the onrushing Vahid Hambo inside the area.Mahoney could have doubled his and Blackburn’s advantage but his left-footed strike went wide of the far post.
Barnett had Albion’s best chance to equalise with a free-kick on the edge of the box but Rovers keeper Andrew Fisher tipped the ball behind for a corner.
The game ended on a sour note for the Seagulls, as Will Collar was forced off injured and replaced by Max Sanders.
There was still time for Rob Hunt to test the Blackburn rearguard, but his strike was blocked and the Lancashire side held on for the win.
