I have a couple of suggestions that I quite liked:

Glenfiddich 15 yo Solera Reserve (about £35-37)
Glenmorangie Original (About £37)

Yeah, i tink the smokey stuff is too subjective. Not sure he's into it. Will probably go down the glenfiddich route.

Can't go far wrong with Macallan.
By the way, whiskey with an E is the Irish stuff, not Scottish.

Unless you know they like smoke monsters, Laphroig and Ardbeg are probably a bit too serious.

Ardbeg would be MY choice, a great price too! But Cian is right, smokey Whisky is a marmite thing so not worth the risk.
You're probably better off with something sweeter with butterscotch and toffee tones rather than smoked bacon. I'd go for the Balvenie 12 Year Old Doublewood Malt Whisky 70cl for £35.

However, the Aberlour 12 is great value at £26 and is very comparable to the Balvenie.

With an extra £5 in the budget, I'd go for this lovely tipple although it was available for £33 in ASDA recently.

Well you could if the bloke doesn't like the the taste of smoke.

I quite like Highland Park, but it's all personal preference really as they are all fairly distinct.

Dalwhinnie is an excellent middle ground whisky with a hint of smoke.

Wouldn't bother with whiskey though.
