Government planning to repeal animal welfare codes

"Conservative ministers are planning to repeal an array of official guidance on animal welfare standards, starting with a move to put the code on chicken-farming into the hands of the poultry industry.

Liz Truss, the environment secretary, is overseeing moves to scrap the statutory codes on farm animal welfare and move to an “industry-led” guidance as part of her department’s deregulatory agenda.

In a change that has caused concern with the RSPCA, Compassion in World*Farming, and opposition parties, the government has already quietly tabled a draft order to scrap the official code on farming chickens for meat and breeding."

Only four more years!

Tories been given 'backhanders' by the poultry industry to roll back regulation? Bad news for animal welfare qnd food standards.

The Conservatives seem content to pi*s everyone off to ensure big profits and control by their rich friends. It's appalling.

Is this really a problem which needs fixing? And if it is, it seems a strange priority.

its probably something that neither needs fixing nor is a priority. its fiddling and tweaking that governments do, in responce to people lobbying for their vested interest, happens all the time across government for good and bad. the law isnt being changed just who writes the code of conduct, isnt really worth the column inches.

social security budget for 2016 is £110bn, for 2015 it was £111bn. more grazing the skin than cutting to the bone.
