Brighton & Hove Albion assistant manager Colin Calderwood hailed a dramatic win over MK Dons this afternoon and a much-improved performance from the players after half-time.

A largely uneventful first half was followed by three goals, two penalties and a sending-off in the second 45 minutes.

He said, “It was a very exciting second half. The first half was probably not as good as what we wanted, but we ground our way into the game against a very spirited MK Dons side.

“The second half has got all the talking points, all the good play from us, and all the controversial decisions.
*
“I think credit goes to the opposition, they were on the front foot and made the breaks for themselves, but we dealt with what they had and were glad to get in at half-time.
*
“The boys knew themselves that they had another level to go into in the second half, and we were better after the break. You’d love for it to be like that for the whole 90 minutes, but you’ve got to respect the opposition and expect that it’s not going to be like that for the whole game.”

The Scotsman was delighted to see Tomer Hemed score twice after coming off the bench in place of Sam Baldock.

“Sam is a little bit tight in his hamstring, so obviously at that stage we couldn’t take any chances. Fortunately, Tomer came on and had a terrific game, so that was a great bit of management from the manager.

“His goal tally is increasing and that’s good for us. He has become the focal point, but the work that Sam Baldock has done in the last three games has been the catalyst for a lot of the goals, whether it’s James Wilson or Tomer.

Calderwood admitted that the outcome of the game could have been very different when the Dons were awarded a controversial late spot-kick, while he also felt the set-piece awarded for their first goal was also debatable.

“We know it’s not a free-kick for the first goal because Bruno has taken it on his chest and of course we’re going to argue about the penalty kick.

“Tomer took it on his face and Dale [Stephens] put his arm out the way. That decision wasn’t blatant and the end result became euphoric.

“It ends up nicely but we could have been looking back on two harsh decisions.
*
“As for Tomer’s disallowed goal, we looked back on it quickly and it is probably a terrific decision by the linesman.”

A total of 7034 Albion fans made the trip up to Buckinghamshire to see the Seagulls move back into automatic promotion places, and Calderwood praised the tremendous turn-out.
