There has been a lot of controversy over the Oscars this year. Famously a lack of diversity - though the conversation has focused mainly on the lack of black nominees (the academy managed to nominate Straight Outta Compton in seemingly the only category they would have white nominees), but also because the two best song nominees not invited to perform were an Asian woman and a Transgender woman.

The new head of the Academy has promised an effort to diversify the Academy, but the Awards are reflective of the Studios and Hollywood, and in my opinion that is where the change needs to happen. John Oliver did a great bit on how Hollywood still whitewash roles on his show last week.

Will all this be forgotten as they focus on celebrating movies, or will it be the main thrust of the show, particularly host Chris Rock's routines throughout the night.

What Mad Max is doing in the Best Picture short list is beyond me. I can't imagine it took any longer to write than it does to watch.

In San Francisco. All three networks have done almost nothing this morning except Oscars, Oscars, Oscars. Fact is they're just trying to fill up blank TV time. Absolutely nothing of interest to talk about. The whole thing is a massive bore.

I certainly agree that protests are to be made involving the Hollywood diversity issue, but i'd throw another one in there for how many nominations Bridge of Spies got, and how the hellicans Mark Ruffalo can be on the list of possible Best Supportings for his performance in Spotlight. If it were 5 nominations for Best Actor/Actress, you might get one male from that list just about, and even his character is a woman inside. For Best Supportings it would be similar, but with Sylvester Stallone, a generally poor actor in dreadful films, being the only one.
I shan't stay up for it, but will wake and be a tad interested, and then slightly annoyed, probably.

What film have they been in to deserve a nomination?

Chris Rock nailed the opening (transcript here if you're interested), but that Stacey Dash bit fell quite flat.

A bit bleary eyed this morning but a great night as always, all the glitz and glamour, pomp and ceremony. Delighted for Di Caprio, the roof nearly came off when he was announced, can't have been a more popular winner for many, many years.
