You have to wonder how a head on collision on a single track could happen in this day and age...particularly somewhere like Germany.
RIP the victims, and hope for the injured, some will possibly not make it.

That's horrendous, the only silver lining (if it even classifies as one) is that the death toll so far is pretty low. Horrible.

Hopefully no-one is quite that stupid.
Took me a while to work out what he meant by 'we all know how the replies to this go...' but I've got it now - and yes, hope nobody goes there. Quite inappropriate.

Sympathy for all the victims.

Single track line too, not good.

I'm assuming/hoping our Herr Tubthumper is nowhere near this?

Thanks for your concern but I'm okay thanks. It's a dark day in Deutschland though. RIP

Memories of the Cowden tragedy in the 1990s (again on a single-line). Railway safety technology has come on in leaps and bounds since then so it is really hard to understand how this could happen today. RIP to those who lost their lives

At about 6.48 local time, two trains were involved in a head-on crash on a single track between Rosenheim and Holkirchen, 40 miles south-east of Munich

Nine people confirmed dead
Almost all of the 150 passengers thought to have been hurt
40 in serious condition
Two people are said to be missing
Both drivers and train guards are said to be among the dead
The trains were operated by Meridian, the track by Deutsche Bahn. An automatic breaking system should have been in place
Both trains were derailed and are wedged into one another
