Random question that popped into my head II - Albion players who also played cricket

Thanks for the interesting information on my last "random" thread.

Discounting Denis Foreman, any Albion players been good at "wielding the willow" as well? I am sure Dean Saunders was linked with a County Cricket team before he took up professional football, or am I just imagining that (not mentioned on his Wikipedia page).

Steve Gatting could have played for Middlesex but chose Arsenal instead.

His son Joe Gatting chose Brighton over Sussex, then when that didn't go so well went back and gave cricket for Sussex a go instead. Not sure where he is now but I think Sussex released him?

I'm on surer ground on this one (although it does depend what you mean by cricket - do you mean CC standard?)

In my lifetime alone I can think of Foreman, Bates, Cross and Joe Gatting (his dad was a useful cricketer too).

The most famous example was Tommy Cook, quite unlucky not to be a double international. And the guy I mentioned in your other question, Leach, played regularly for Sussex. I'm sure there are others: these are from the top of my head

EDIT: Just checked and Ken Suttle played three times for the Albion in 1949 - much more famous as a cricketer though

Deano played club cricket at Haywards Heath in the Sussex League, whilst at BHA.

Played for Hampshire for two seasons after being released by Sussex in 2013. Currently playing for Northern Districts in Australian Grade cricket.

Anyway back to cricket Brian Horton played in local leagues when at Port Vale not sure about time at Brighton.

Don Bates played for the Albion & Sussex CCC. Ian Chapman guested for the Sunday side i ran, when he was a youngster at the Albion. He is not a natural cricketer though!

Apart from the players I mentioned earlier, I also noticed that Freddie Goodwin played for Lancashire.

The player I would like to know about is Ken Tiler. I remember when the Albion played in a charity cricket match in the 70s, he absolutely stood out as a player. He'd clearly played a bit and wondered whether he'd come through league cricket

I played against Solly March when he played for Hellingly a few seasosn ago, he now has moved to Chiddingly cc I believe.
Also once played against Adam Virgo when he was turning out for Haywards Heath 2s.

No albion connection, but Steve Ogrizovic the former Coventry keeper was also a minor counties player, fast bowler I seem to recall.

Remember an Albion charity cricket match at Henfield when Mickey Adams was manager the first time. He looked pretty decent.

He was indeed, he played for Shropshire.

There must be a connection between goalkeepers and cricket: I've seen Jim Standen and Jimmy Cumbes play first class cricket and the old Man City goalkeeper Ken Mulhern play in a club match.

The only footballer I've played against was the old Southampton player Trevor Hebberd - and caught him for a duck

Jake Robinson played for Newhaven CC, there are cricket team photos on the wall of the clubhouse and Jake is in some of them,
not sure if he played when he was in the Albion first team though.
There is also 2 of Jake's signed and framed football shirts on the clubhouse wall, 1 BHA and 1 Shrewsbury.

Bloody hell - you know your stuff! I was going to be proud of my Don Bates contribution until I read this! Ken Suttle lived in Worthing and used to write a column for the local rag, The Suttle Side of Cricket. To my recollection this mainly consisted of playing cards in rain-affected games in places like Ilkeston! I think (from memory) he might also have played for Chelsea.

LOL. When I was on Mastermind my second specialist subject was the history of Sussex cricket club (sadly I never reached that stage),

Don Bates used to teach PE at Moulsecoomb school after he retired from cricket, I saw him reffing school matches there sometimes.

Ken Suttle was on Chelsea's books but didn't play a first team game for them
