Granted they stole but they represented a different generation of crooks, almost with a code of ethics, people forget it's long been revealed that three of the robbers were never caught, and used their respective shares to set themselves up for the rest of their lives, yet their names have never been revealed and in almost every case been taken to the grave by the other gang members.
However wrong the robbery was you have to admire that kind of loyalty.

The most curious thing..
Not if you were the train driver who was coshed and never fully recovered.

He received a black eye and fascia bruising from the attack. Very nasty that also left psychological damage no doubt but he did return to work where they put him on light duties. Died of leukaemia though 8 years later. Unconnected with the attack unlike some peoples recollection..
Not condoning it mind.

Really? Having read a couple of (of many) books about the Great Train Robbery that is a bit of an illusion. In a number of cases the loot was left with 'friends' for safekeeping, only to inconveniently disappear. Honour amongst thieves . . hmm.

So, the police ask where the loot is, you answer "I left with a mate and it just, er, disappeared.....you tell me where it is officer"
