"The sportswear giant informed the IAAF of its decision - understood to be a direct result of the doping scandal sweeping the sport - last week.

Sources say the move will cost the IAAF and its commercial partner Dentsu tens of millions of dollars in revenue.

It is sure to come as a major blow for embattled president Lord Coe."

It's the start of the end

As a result of the doping scandal, or as a result of the IAAF 'gifting' the World Championships to the works track of their biggest competitor?

There's more to it than meets the eye.

Adidas have only 5% of the running footwear market, compared to 49% for Nike, so their sponsorship has not been a success, and, as someone said on Five Live's 'Wake Up To Money' this morning, their running kit is a bit rubbish.

The deal is 'only' £2 million a year (wouldn't pay a PL player's wage) compared to the £75 million a year adidas pay to Manchester United, and adidas also have a deal with FIFA that continues to 2030, at about £62 million per World Cup.

It is also two fingers to Sebastian 'Family Values' Coe, who has close financial links to Nike.

This could be a real coup for Nike - it's Olympic year, and if all the top athletes are drugs-tested and this is shown to have been a clean competition then the sport is on the way back.

Food and drink giant Nestle has ended its sponsorship of the IAAF, as it fears the doping scandal engulfing the world athletics governing body could damage its reputation.
The Swiss company said it had taken the decision with "immediate effect".

However, the IAAF said it was still "in discussion" with Nestle over the final year of its sponsorship deal.

Last month, sportswear giant Adidas ended its sponsorship deal with the IAAF.

"We have decided to end our partnership with the IAAF Kids Athletics programme with immediate effect," Nestle said.

"This decision was taken in light of negative publicity associated with allegations of corruption and doping in sport made against the IAAF.

"We believe this could negatively impact our reputation and image and will therefore terminate our existing agreement with the IAAF, established in 2012.
