It’s nice to get a result, but there’s still plenty we can take from the game."
Ian Buckman
Brighton & Hove Albion’s under-18s came out on top in a thrilling five-goal encounter against Southampton at the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre on Saturday.
*
Second-half goals from Jordan Maguire-Drew, Max Sanders and Thomas Byrne clinched a 3-2 win over the Saints, while securing a second successive win for Ian Buckman's side.
*
Maguire-Drew opened the scoring in the 55th minute after he fired home a loose ball from inside the box.
*
Southampton hit back just two minutes later when Stuart Wilkin curled a superb finish past Albion keeper Bailey Vose.
*
Sanders restored Brighton’s advantage just past the hour mark, after he made a surging run from midfield and finished with a close-range strike.
*
Harley Willard scored a second equaliser for Saints in the 79th minute, but Byrne ensured Buckman’s side claimed all three points with his first touch from a corner.

POST-MATCH THOUGHTS
*
Under-18 coach Ian Buckman said, “I’ve been happy with the progress we’ve been making and the players' attitude to their performances has been very positive. They got the rewards again on Saturday.
*
“The first half was very tight, we had a lot of possession and there was a lot of structure to the game.
*
“In the second half we were a bit more expansive and a little bit more positive with our possession, and it was very pleasing to get different players onto the scoresheet.
*
“It helps the lads in terms of their confidence; it’s part of the development process for us and the performances have been good for a while.
*
“We’ll keep building on that and hopefully we’ll keep improving. It’s nice to get a result, but there’s still plenty we can take from the game.”
*
ALBION: Vose; Davies (Byrne 83), White (Meyers 45), Cadman, Cox; Meekums (Moore 68), Barker, Sanders; Maguire-Drew, Mandroiu, Garcia.
