If we had offered him a contract straight away at the end of that season he would have been a Brighton player now. We had assumed we could let things ride and that at the end of the window we could just say OK Stephen Ward we will now offer you a contract but Burnley were on the ball and signed him up albeit as cover.

That was not untypical of our ineptitude in the transfer market.

PS Stephen Ward is playing a blinder !
