I always think the Powerball jackpot publicity is very misleading. The PB site is currently predicting a $1.4 Billion jackpot, but that actually translates into $868 million if you go for the cash option rather than the annuity. That $868M is then taxed at the top rate – 39.6%, so what starts off at $1.4B actually ends up as $524 million. Still more than enough for most people, but considerably less than the $1.4B it started off as. From memory if you win the UK lottery the amount of money advertised is what you get as you don’t have the cash / annuity option and it isn’t taxed.
