Off topic - sorry - but would be interested in the great and good of NSC's well-travelled
opinions.

I have to go to Texas, US in the summer for a few days, but don't fancy sticking around
in that state for long. The music and ranch scene isn't my thing really.

If you were there - where else would you go within half a day's
travel, for example or alternative suggestions for Texas which goes against the
norm (whether by flight, train, coach etc).

If a flight is an option, Cancun, Jamaica, Haiti or the Dom Republic are all within ~3 hours flying time.
Shame Cuba will not accept US flights yet as Havana is worth a look.

I love Texas and have visited there half a dozen occasions.

If you're based around the Houston area, Space Center Houston is well worth a visit. Combine it with a trip to Galveston and the coast.

Food-wise, Pappasito's is a must for Tex-Mex as is the chicken fried steak. Go for the local Shiner Bock beer or any of the craft beers in Austin.

30 miles outside Austin is Bastrop, a lovely place with historic buildings.

Hope you like the heat. Texas is pretty warm in Summer.

Despite the heat, I'm fixin' to go back...

Not too far down to San Antonio and the Alamo. North to Dallas and catch a Texas Rangers baseball game they are the reigning AL West champions. The stadium is next to a good theme park if you enjoy that - the baseball game will probably be an evening game.
Out of state, you could go across to Louisiana and see the bayous and down to New Orlenas which is definitely worth a visit.
