Albion are out of the FA Cup, defeated 1-0 at Hull City in a third-round tie between two much-changed teams today.
They were beaten by a Robert Snodgrass spot kick just before half-time but spent most of the afternoon on the back foot.
Andrew Crofts hit the bar deep in added time from Kazenga LuaLua's low cross.
The major pluses – assuming they do not suffer any adverse reaction – were outings for LuaLua and Sam Baldock as second-half substitutes.
Liam Ridgewell also showed what an asset he can be during his loan stint on an afternoon when Albion had to do a lot of defending.
And Niki Maenpaa made a couple of excellent saves in a rare outing between the sticks.
The Seagulls, including recent signings Ridgewell and Richie Towell in an unusual 3-4-2-1 formation, were second best in the first half.

But they looked like making it to half-time intact until conceding a penalty in the 42nd minute.Having initially seemed to have dealt with a corner, they allowed Tom Huddlestone to help the ball back into the box, where Lewis Dunk fouled Harry Maguire.
Snodgrass thumped an emphatic spot kick past Maenpaa.
Isaac Hayden had earlier twice gone close from about 20 yards, Adama Diomande sent a free header off target and Diomande and Snodgrass got in each other’s way in front of goal.
Dunk and Connor Goldson, playing in a back three with Ridgewell, were both booked in the first period.
Albion employed Towell with Andrew Crofts in a pair playing off lone frontman Elvis Manu but did not really threaten.
Maenpaa kept them in the game with second-half saves from Ryan Taylor and Sone Aluko.
Baldock almost forced a draw late on with a low shot just wide from outside the box.
Crofts then so nearly forced a replay.
But the scoreline arguably flattered Albion.
