It was always going to be challenging. Nonetheless, the Albion appear to have been struck worse than their promotion-chasing rivals by the notorious Christmas period as a demoralising run of 3 points from 6 games leaves them at least 4 points adrift of the automatic promotion places. Despite beginning December with one of the best comeback victories - if not the best - in the AMEX era, a 3-2 defeat of Charlton, the worrying signs of a calamitous capitulation ensued. After succumbing to late pressure in games against Derby and QPR, 88 minute goals in both games meant that Brighton slipped down to second in the table, ravaged with a horrendous injury crisis, and ultimately devoid of confidence. Who overtook them to the summit? Middlesbrough. And their next game? Middlesbrough. Typically, their record-breaking, sensational 22-league-game unbeaten run (which, incidentally, had begun against Middlesbrough on the concluding day of the 2014-15 campaign) was halted in sour fashion by the clinical, effective team from teesside. Subsequently, the mighty seagulls have failed to score in four games, and thus accumulated 1 point from the festive period, a run which means that the Albion drop to fourth in the league.
But it is a new year now, and although we have already lost the first game of the year, we have a much required 11-day break until our next league encounter - a trip to Rotherham United, who are in a similar position to us last season. Next, we travel to a rejuvenated Blackburn Rovers team led by Paul Lambert, before finishing the month at home to a shaky Huddersfield team. The questions are: will Mr. Bloom get out his cheque-book and re-establish our hopes of automatic promotion; and the one that concerns this thread is how many points will we accumulate in January 2016? I think that we will go through the transfer window unbeaten, but not with three wins..what about you?
