  • Brighton are now nine points clear at the top of the league
  • A brace from Charlotte Gurr and a goal each from Jay Blackie and Lisa Fulgence secure all three points
  • Ronnell Humes scores a consolation for Tottenham
  • Albion win their sixth consecutive game
Brighton & Hove Albion women capped off 2015 with a comfortable 4-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur at Culver Road.
The win extends Albion’s lead at the top of the league to nine points going into the festive break, after Charlton's match against Cardiff was postponed.
Charlotte Gurr’s brace and a goal each from Jay Blackie and Lisa Fulgence were enough to overcome a well organised Spurs side.
The Seagulls are now unbeaten in seven games in all competitions and have only conceded two goals in their last six games, scoring 16 times.
The game began in a feisty and competitive manner, with both teams enjoying a share of possession. Amy Taylor had the best of Albion’s chances in the opening exchanges, but she failed to hit the target on two occasions.
Albion’s quality began to show as the first half went on and they took the lead after 20 minutes. Sophie Perry’s pace took her away from a Spurs defender and her cut back found Gurr, who smashed home from close range.
As the rain started to pour over Culver Road, Albion went in search for a second goal. Taylor found herself unmarked at the back post but her header was well saved from point-blank range by Chloe Morgan.
The second goal did come through a likely source. Gurr unleashed a powerful free kick which left Morgan rooted to the spot to double Albion’s lead going into half time.

Brighton continued to play free-flowing football after the break, and received little in way of a response from Spurs. The league leaders could have extended their lead when Lucy Somes broke through on goal. The Albion winger tried her luck from just outside the box, her effort was just too high.
Deanna Cooper and Taylor both had chances to net Albion’s third of the game, before Jay Blackie fired home from a corner after 68 minutes.
Taylor continued to search for her 11th goal of the season, but time and time again she was denied by Morgan.
Spurs denied Albion a clean sheet with four minutes of normal time remaining, as substitute Ronnell Humes found herself unmarked inside the box and fired home past Faye Baker.
Substitute Fulgence continued her road to recovery by coming on to score for a second consecutive game. Her cross-come-shot in stoppage time evaded Morgan and nestled into the bottom corner.
Second-placed Charlton Athletic will have a chance to cut into Albion’s nine-point lead with three games in hand.
James Marrs’s side will look to continue their impressive form after the Christmas break when they take on Luton Town in the SSE FA Women’s Cup second round on Sunday 10th January 2016.
ALBION: Baker; D Cooper, Ashton-Jones, Ritchie; Perry, Blackie, Barton, Gurr, Somes; Natkiel (Fulgence 72) Taylor (Young 79).
