All my life I have believed the B52s group to be named after the Enola Gay, Hiroshima bomber plane. Now I realise that was a B29, I think, and this workhorse is the B52 from where they came.

2044 is probably too early if they follow through with the re-engining programme - will be replacing the 8 engines with 4 much newer ones if that happens.

Awesome aircraft, known to crews as the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat F**cker) but certainly still capable of 'doing a job' and likely to be so for a long time.

If only we'd have been able to maintain and upgrade our Vulcans in the same way as the Yanks have with this...
