Injury/added on time and timewasting

A question we were pondering amongst our little group yesterday was whether if a team that was leading and then wasting time, and in the refs mind would be then tagged on the end, would then be removed if they were to fall behind.

This was based on there 'only' being 4 mins yesterday, despite 3 goals, a sending off and several subs and a couple of injuries. Last week we got the frankly ridiculous 6 mins for very little (OK, some time wasting!).

I have long thought that would be a good plan - allow for time wasting by a team that was leading, and if they then are losing at the end don't add it on. That would need to ref to keep a separate tally of time wasted by each team and only add the time wasted by the team that is winning at the end. Not sure what they do if its a draw though!

Yes, four minutes did seem modest in the extreme for the second half, after - what was it? - 8 minutes in the first half?! Not that most of us were complaining, of course :lolol:

Good call. I've often pondered this. Charlton, 1:2 up with 8 minutes to go take forever at throw ins and free kicks (as any team, incl Brighton, would). But at 3:2 down the ref indicates say 6 minutes because of time wasting. Could this now be to the time wasters benefit? One would hope there is a 25 page memo sent to refs on this subject.

This happened in a home game earlier in the season. Bristol City maybe?

They wasted time continually but then we came back and took the lead quite late on. The referee added a load of injury time due to all of their prior time wasting. The effect was like they'd banked some time from early in the game for when they needed it later on.

I think the ref did the best thing by booking their goalie quite soon into the match - sending out
a clear message.

My brother in law, a Pompey supporter, was at their game on Tuesday, the opposition goalkeeper was taking so long to take the kick, that one of the Pompey fans jumped onto the pitch and took it for him. Whilst this action should not be condoned, I wonder why if the fans can see timewasting the ref can't.
The fan was escorted from the ground, but who is being ripped off by timewasting, the fans.

Definitely. Time-wasting should be punished, and it should be added on no matter who is winning, otherwise it rips off the most important people as far as any professional sport is concerned: the paying fans.

I won't condone the fan running onto the pitch but that is class!

Change it to 30 minutes each way with the ball in play. Whenever the ball goes out of play, or when play is stopped for some other reason, stop the clock and don't start it again until the goal kick/free kick/ throw-in etc. is actually taken.
A large clock in the stadium, controlled remotely by the ref, would let everybody (including the players) know how long to go.

Would it be solved by having a big clock and timekeeper (ex Ref) to stop the clock whenever he thought appropriate. I read once that the ball is actually in play fer about 65 mins in a 90 min game.

Worst was the Charlton tvvat that got injured behind the North in the second half and promptly rolled on to the pitch to hold up the game. Should have been rolled straight back off again with a yellow card for his troubles.

That was very refreshing to see. It's so annoying when the referee warns the keeper about 10 times and then books him in the 90th minute.

With our high tech CCTV why wasnt the p..t who kicked the ball back from the front of the Charlton stand to the back to hold up play identified and removed as it was a deliberte act to incite the fans.

I can never really get too wound up about opposition teams wasting time, as let's face it, we do exactly the same in the reverse situation, Stockers getting booked for it last week against Brum for example. Yes, it's bloody frustrating, and Charlton were pretty bad yesterday doing it after about 15 minutes, but me-h, it happens all the time.

It was a deliberate act to hold up play but didnt constitute any grounds to remove a paying customer, whats with all the precious posters feeling outraged today? A team having a really bad time of it time wasted to get a result, their fans followed suit as we would in the same position, how many times have we time wasted at the end of a game to get the result recently?

I have nothing against teams time wasting, I dont like it but it is part of football but for that Yob to do that and incite the fans I think was wrong and should have been dealt with as it should if it happened by one of our supporters. Little incidents like that cause problems at matches that esculate.
